The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that more than 12 million children are at risk for hunger in the United States.
In 2006, 19% of Ohio’s children lived in poverty; 22% of them were under age six. (Children’s Defense Fund/Annie E. Casey Foundation)
This equates to over 500,000 of Ohio’s children living in poverty. (Food Research and Action Center)
This year the SERV Team is working eleviate some of the hunger pangs Columbus, Ohio is facing by creating a new project called the World Hunger Tour and Battle Against Hunger.
SERV Team students are working on planning an event called The World Hunger Tour, which includes panel/speaker event for Wednesday, November 19 in the evening and a walk-through display piece. This event will be in combination with a panel display that will address the food crisis in varying areas of the world including Columbus, Ohio throughout the entire week. The display will be up in the RPAC common areas from Monday - Wednesday and then move to the building where the panel will take place and will remain up until Friday afternoon (Nov. 21st).
Beat Michigan Week (http://beatmichigan.osu.edu/) and the SERV (Students Engaged in Responsible Volunteering) team are partnering in the Beat Michigan Week Battle Against Hunger. We are partnering with staff at the University of Michigan in a competition to see who can donate the most nonperishable food items (to be determined by weight). We will have drop-off points at the Ohio Union, RPAC, Fresh Express, North Commons, Kennedy Commons, and Off Campus Student Services. All donated goods from here at OSU will benefit the MidOhio Food Bank.
For more information on these events please contact Adam Rapien.1@osu.edu. Or Katie Lowry.85@osu.edu or Whitney Davis-Ellison.1@osu.edu. For more information about the SERV team call 614-292-7378.
